Chantal van Rijt works across mediums, zooming in and out of the possible worlds with an approach of a contemporary alchemist. For the WARP exhibition in the SEA Foundation’s vitrine, she continues the material research into a secretion produced by Kerria lacca insect. Van Rijt uses the material to make sculptures and forms a creature for the isolated glass space of the SEA Foundation.

Van Rijt’s practice is driven by experimentation, detailed study of the subject matter, and patient observation of the surroundings. The core motivation of her artistic research stems from a curiosity to grasp what often stays unseen by human eyes. By including the elements and remnants of insects, shifting the scales, and creating the space for the insect infestation, the artist is measuring our capacity to relate with the non-human, pleasant and ugly, acceptable and disturbing.

WARP #11

The exhibition is part of WARP, a series of vitrine exhibitions which were activated in 2020. These exhibitions now also follow the SEA Foundation’s folds on art and sustainability, currently researching the fold VIII. on Spirit. In this fold, we are inspired by women’s struggles, subversive rituals and collective practices, with a desire to explore the existence of many worlds and the need to inhabit the space in between them.

The aim of the WARP series is to stimulate artistic research and present the adaptations of the works made by regional artists or artists with regional connections. The artist was invited to take part in the WARP series by our Leuven-based partner, the art space Cas-co. This cross-border collaboration supports the intention of the WARP program to enlarge the Noord-Brabant region and build artistic relationships within a close and not enclosed radius of our region.
