The exhibition Miscellany by Japanese artist Junko O’Neill offers a fascinating exploration of the traditional medium of Iwaenogu, an ancient painting material made from finely ground minerals that remains relevant in both traditional and contemporary Japanese art. First utilized in mural paintings within the 12th Kofun tombs, Iwaenogu is characterized by its matte finish, muted tones, and shimmering effects under light, all of which play a pivotal role in O'Neill's work. Despite its rich history and beauty, Iwaenogu remains relatively unknown outside Japan, particularly in the UK.

A central theme in O'Neill's work is the concept of "Ma" — the Japanese aesthetic principle of negative space and the relationship between time and space. In traditional Japanese art, "Ma" represents a space of potential and stillness, where the unspoken can be felt, and she imbues her paintings with this idea. The layers of Iwaenogu pigments suggest the passage of time, and the muted, soft palette evokes the quietude of these transitions. Her abstract compositions create delicate atmospheres, where each layer adds depth and creates visual tension, inviting the viewer to pause and contemplate.

Drawing inspiration from a wide array of sources, including magazine images, photographs, and elements of the natural world, O'Neill's compositions reflect a rich tapestry of colours and forms. The title Miscellany aptly reflects this diversity, highlighting her experimental approach and the myriad of ideas that inform her work. By blending traditional Japanese methods with a modern sensibility, her paintings offer a meditative experience, encouraging the audience to engage with the fleeting nature of time and the spaces it inhabits.
