Origins and Entities, an international online solo digital arts exhibition by Michael Ananian opens on December 01, 2023, and will continue for two months until January 31, 2024.
Michael Ananian's digital artwork depicts the primeval cosmological forces of the ancient Greek religion. Out of nothingness, the four primeval elements sprung: Chaos, Gaia (Mother Earth), Tartaros (The Underworld), and Eros (Love, Sex). The ancient Greeks don't even try to explain how these fundamental cosmic forces came to be; they just appeared. Michael thinks these cosmological creation stories are relevant to our current scientific understanding about the origins of the cosmos. Scientific cosmological theories about the origins of everything like the Big Bang seem very akin to ancient Greek explanations of such things. The Big Bang theory has a religious aura about it; its efforts to peel away layers of reality, to look deeper into and beneath what the senses can know, reveals more mysteries and questions than it answers.

My name is Michael Ananian. I was born and raised in Haverhill, Massachusetts and spent my high school years in Atkinson, New Hampshire. I got my BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1987 and my MFA from Yale School of Art in 1990. In 1994, I moved to Greensboro, North Carolina to teach at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as an assistant professor of painting and drawing. I'm still there, but now I'm a tenured, full professor.
My most recent work, digital painting began during the pandemic--a silver-lining in an otherwise awful time. For about three years I taught online, due to the pandemic and being vulnerable due to my health history and had to find a way to lecture effectively about drawing. I got tech, Wacom tablet and stylus so that I could drawing in real-time and demonstrate concepts while my students watched via screen-sharing. I began in earnest to apply my digital art skills to my personal practice at the start of 2022.
