Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition with Cara Barer.
“I decided this body of work would be high key, uplifting, and bright – a kind of renewal that would overcome the past year’s darkness.” – Cara Barer
Cara Barer begins her photographic process with books and occasionally uses other papers such as maps, newspapers, travel photography and phonebooks in her work. By folding, dyeing and manipulating the pages, she sculpts the objects into new forms ready to be photographed. Through her captured image, she is able to give new life to old books and papers.
Rather than going out to hunt for new materials, Barer was challenged to use what she had on hand due to the restrictions of the pandemic. Luckily, through years of collecting vast amounts of books and papers, Barer had what she needed to begin creating. Barer experimented with different techniques, texts, textures and colors to create Bricolage, a body of work that is bright and uplifting, combatting the difficulties of the previous year.
