Kenise Barnes Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of contemporary paintings and powdered pigment drawings by Mary Judge in the Kent, CT gallery.
Mary Judge is an important artist; her paintings, drawings and prints are in public and private collections throughout the world. Judge demonstrates mastery across many mediums, each new series illustrates her continuing exploration of materiality and form. Judge’s ongoing exploration of powdered pigments is used to stunning effect in her most recent Poptics series, seven of which are featured in this show. This exhibition also includes a significant return to oil painting for the artist with two large and five small paintings.
Mary Judge, who lives part-time in Italy, has developed a distinctive technique for making her signature powdered pigment drawings. For this exhibition, Judge unveils a vibrant new powdered pigment series titled Poptics. The drawings are made with a specific technique based on spolvero (“to dust” in Italian). A similar technique was used by Renaissance artists to transfer drawings to the plaster wall for fresco paintings. Judge’s Poptics are made by layering multiple hand-cut stencils and pouncing each with a bag of ground pigment; the resulting works are both controlled and organic. They balance elegantly between ordered symmetry and graceful surrender to unpredictable materials.
Mary Judge's paintings and drawings explore the diagrammatic, the topological, the three-dimensional aspects both through a linear-planar and tonal atmospheric representation of form. Judge’s work is about transformation through repetition and pattern. By employing an underlying geometric structure, the work explores the emotive power of reductive forms deployed through reiteration. Mary Judge develops a form and, through seriality, continues mining its rich variations as a way of exploring what seems like a lost territory between image and object.
Mary Judge’s work has been exhibited worldwide. It is in many significant private and public collections including a permanent public commission for the MTA Art and Design (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), New York, NY, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, The British Museum, London, England, and Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, NYU/Langone Hospital, New York, NY, Cassino Museo di Arte Contemporanea, Cassino, Italy, American Embassy, Sanaa, Yemen, US Embassy, Kazakhstan, Fogg Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, to name a few.
