Hahn’s work is inspired by 19th century Farmer’s Almanacs handed down through her family. The almanacs promised, “New, Useful and Entertaining Matter,” which included among other things, astrological calculations, weather predictions, poetry, and tips for farmers and housewives. The yearly publications provide a glimpse into life around 150 years ago that the artist found fascinating and touching. The titles of the pieces are direct quotes from the almanacs, for example: “No Time To Lose Now,” “Some Sun Some Showers,” “The Small Fruits,” and “Change in the Weather.”
The artist incorporates oil, graphite, pastel, and ink with her wax technique to achieve rich and varied surfaces. The collages incorporate some original material from an already tattered almanac.
