The encaustic paintings in Gardens and Garden Walls celebrate the changing moods of a garden under diverse circumstances. The pieces titles include Evening, After the Rain andFallow. These abstract responses are often captured fleetingly out of the corner of the artist’s eye. Hahn is inspired by nature and the process of caring for a garden which she feels is similar to creating a painting. Both require tenderness and courage where some elements survive, some not, things are mysteriously moved around, and sometimes dug up for a fresh start.
Hahn is also enchanted with garden walls, particularly ancient ones. She feels they are witnesses to history and hold secrets. In her wall pieces, she evokes a sense of mystery through layers of collage and mixed media.
