The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to present two distinctive exhibitions, "George Tchobanoglous: Petals and Place" and "Adam Forfang: Artifacts", by two excellent artists. Each demonstrates mastery over their medium, whether that is photography or paint. These exhibitions will be on view from December 4 to December 28, 2024.

George Tchobanoglous is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCD.  His principal areas of research include wastewater treatment and potable reuse of wastewater, solid waste management, and small wastewater treatment systems. However, photography, especially black and white photography, has been a lifelong hobby and passion. At 15, he began printing black and white images in a makeshift darkroom in the cellar of his family’s farmhouse in Patterson, CA. Working originally with roll-film cameras, primarily 35- and 120-mm format, he has used digital cameras exclusively since 2015. In addition to photography, George is a passionate gardener and traveler. “Petals and Places” combines these two loves with pictures of flowers grown at home juxtaposed with memorable travel images. The “Petals” images are primarily of flowers he’s grown in his backyard over a three-year period, during the Covid epidemic. The diverse “Places” images were all taken during research, business, and personal travels all over the world during the past 55 years.

Adam Forfang is a native to the Bay Area, trained at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where he earned a BFA. Shortly thereafter, he transitioned from a decorated student to a professional artist and teacher. He currently teaches locally, at Davis High School, and is a continued champion of arts education. Forfang's approach to painting is eclectic both in style and subject matter. His clever arrangement of objects, striking use of color, and witty approach to his subjects truly set him apart. His style in more recent years has transitioned into what he calls “Compressions.” Drawing from color theory and the aesthetics of pixelated images, Forfang transforms still-lifes, landscapes, and other scenes of every-day-life into optical illusions. His charming paintings defy the eye and remind you of the increasingly digital world of today.

The exhibitions’ opening reception is to be held on Friday, December 6 from 7-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and free refreshments. The gallery will also be open on Friday, December 13th until 9:00PM for the 2nd Friday ArtAbout.
