This September, Japanese craft and design store wagumi in London’s Oxo Tower will present the second edition of “Kagoshima: Stories in Craft from South Japan” during the London Design Festival.  The event showcases unique craft items from Kagoshima, Japan, making a rare appearance in Europe. Visitors will discover the rich heritage of Kagoshima through ceramics, glass, textiles, tea, folk toys, and bamboo crafts.  Each piece narrates the prefecture's history, influenced by its volcanic landscape and cultural evolution from the old Satsuma domain.

Highlights include ceramics in the Kuro-mon tradition, made in with locally sourced materials and classic styles by the Ryomonji potter’s collective, and with fresh interpretation by Kaori Sasaki.  Kagoshima’s abundant bamboo is a material for craft for small firms such as Yagitake, and Oh no Konbo folk toys, and regional tea styles will also feature.  The event’s artwork is by Motohiro Waki, who with his Kagomania brand tells the modern stories and identity of his home region.

The event runs from 14th to 22nd September 2024, open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am - 6pm, at wagumi, Unit 1.09, Oxo Tower Wharf, Barge House Street, London, SE1 9PH. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the enduring crafts and stories of Kagoshima.
