‘Clothes You'll Never Wear’ is a participatory art installation that challenges the function of the retail space as a site of fast fashion consumption by transforming it into an immersive workshop and creative hub for making, reusing and sharing.

Artist in residence Lito Apostolakou uses waste materials to create textile sculptures based on personal stories, memories and perceptions of identity. Drawing inspiration from visual, textual, and audio resources, she invites members of the public to join her in using recyclable materials and waste fabric to create imaginary garments.

‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ responds to the current precarious climate by transforming waste into visual expressions of identity and by reimagining the high street as a centre of creativity. Princes Arcade links the cultural hub of the neighbouring Royal Academy with the bespoke menswear retailers of Jermyn Street, with the project representing a conceptual and physical bridge between both.

You are invited to witness the collection of absurd garments develop and grow, learn about the stories that inspired the pieces or tune into personal memories.

Artist ( Description ):

Lito Apostolakou is an installation and mixed-media artist with an academic background in history.  Working with assemblage structures, drawing, and moving image, her art practice engages with the architecture of remembered space, in particular domestic interiors as archives of intimacy shaped by memories and fictions.

She is currently developing The Archive of Daydreams, a body of work that began as an autobiographical exploration of domestic interiors and came into its own during lockdown. The project has since grown to interact with other people’s narratives and informs her installation ‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ as artist in residence with Westminster City Council.

Originally from Athens, Apostolakou has been a Londoner since 1988.

Other Info:

'Clothes You'll Never Wear' is part of a pop-up project launched by Westminster City Council in partnership with the Heart of London Business Alliance and The Crown Estate. The initiative provides opportunities to local start-ups, small scale businesses and artists to fill vacant retail space with temporary shops and art exhibitions.

Lito Apostolakou's installation is amongst the first pop-ups with further initiatives to be announced soon. This is part of a wider programme to support economic recovery in the Westminster.
