Barbagelata Contemporary Art Foundation is thrilled to present Earthbound: Art, Utility, and Emotion, a solo exhibition featuring the works of renowned artist Rob Snyder. The exhibition, on view from October 15th, 2024, offers a deep dive into Snyder's fascinating artistic trajectory, which bridges the realms of painting and ceramics, while reflecting on his multifaceted career in advertising and the influence of 20th-century modernist icons.
Rob Snyder’s evolution as an artist is characterized by a unique blend of traditional form and modern aesthetics, shaped by his early mentorship with American modernists like Ilya Bolotowsky, Willem de Kooning, and Ibram Lassaw. Initially starting his career as a painter, Snyder expanded into ceramics during his Master's program at Pratt Institute, integrating his knowledge of both art historical and ceramic traditions into a singular body of work. Earthbound provides an in-depth look at how these dual practices interact and evolve through Snyder's artistic lens.
A key feature of Snyder’s ceramics is his innovative approach to incorporating industrial and cultural objects as sources of inspiration. His practice resonates with the ethos of Pop Art, which famously transformed everyday objects into iconic symbols of artistic expression. Snyder’s Fashion Plates series exemplifies this dynamic, reinterpreting his experiences in the advertising world by rendering images of fashion models on bisque plates. By merging commercial imagery with fine art techniques, Snyder blurs the boundaries between art and design, functionality and beauty.
"Rob Snyder's work epitomizes the conversation between utility and artistry, where everyday objects can possess both function and emotional depth," says Sophia Alvarez, curator of the exhibition. "His ceramics in particular, with their roots in Pop Art’s re-contextualization of the mundane, invite us to consider the artistic potential in objects we often take for granted."
Earthbound will explore the significant milestones in Snyder’s career, with a focus on the innovative intersections of painting and pottery. By contextualizing his work within broader art movements, the exhibition traces Snyder’s development while highlighting the emotional resonance of his utilitarian and aesthetic creations.

Rob Snyder’s artistic journey from painting to pottery reflects a continuous engagement with materiality, form, and surface. His early mentorship with some of the most influential artists of the 20th century provided a strong foundation in abstraction and modernism, while his later transition into ceramics allowed him to explore new avenues of creativity and expression. By drawing on industrial objects, cultural insights, and his extensive experience in advertising, Snyder has crafted a unique body of work that speaks to the enduring bond between art, earth, and utility. His work situates him within the ongoing dialogue between painting and pottery, and between traditional craft and modern art, offering a powerful commentary on the possibilities of ceramics in the contemporary art world.
