A survey exhibition of Anne Ferran’s most significant projects and series, spanning almost 30 years

ACP is dedicating its Summer Season to respected Australian photomedia artist Anne Ferran. Ferran’s images explore the residues of Australia and New Zealand’s colonial histories, observing their gaps and silences and what else they reveal. The largest exhibition of Ferran’s works ever held, Shadow Land includes a selection of photographic, textile, video and text works from Ferran’s most significant projects and series that span a career of almost 30 years. The exhibition comprises her early, landmark series Carnal Knowledge (1984) and Scenes on the Death of Nature (1986), their staged classical tableaux reflecting feminist theories of representation. Also included is more recent work including Box of Birds (2013) and the artist book Prison Library(2014). Shadow Land is also accompanied by a publication of the same name, beautifully produced by Power Publications, University of Sydney.

Anne Ferran has been a leading figure in photomedia since the 1980s and has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Her work is in the collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, George Eastman House (Rochester, NY), National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria, amongst others.

Anne Ferran is represented by Stills Gallery, Sydney and Sutton Gallery, Melbourne.
